Cat grooming, by people who will

Most salons here will not take cats, and most cats do not need one. But a cat who has stopped grooming herself is usually telling you something — and that is worth finding out.

A cat who needs grooming is usually telling you something

Healthy cats groom themselves for hours a day and rarely need help with it. So when a coat goes matted, greasy or clumped, the coat is the symptom and not the problem. There are four usual answers, and all four are things a groomer on their own can only guess at.

They cannot reach any more Weight. A cat that has put on a kilo or two often cannot twist to the base of the tail and the lower back — which is exactly where the matting starts. Weigh them properly, and talk about food rather than about grooming.
It hurts to twist Arthritis, and it is far commoner in cats than owners think. Look at whether they still jump onto the counter, or take the stairs in one go. A joint examination, and pain relief that is safe for cats specifically.
It hurts to lick Dental pain. A cat with a sore mouth stops using it for anything optional, and grooming is optional. A look under the lip, and a dental plan if it needs one.
They feel unwell Kidney disease, thyroid trouble, and most chronic illness in an older cat shows first as a coat that has gone greasy, clumped or dull. Bloods and urine, run here, back the same day.

This is the entire reason to have your cat groomed somewhere with a vet in the building: the groom deals with the coat, and somebody qualified deals with why it happened.

Where matting starts, and in what order

Mats do not appear evenly. They begin in five places, always the same five, and by the time you can see one from across the room it has been there a fortnight. Run your fingers through these once a week and you will almost never need us for matting at all.

1 Behind the ears The first place a long-haired cat mats, and the easiest to miss because you stroke over it.
2 Under the chin and chest Food and saliva get in. It felts rather than tangles.
3 Armpits Skin rubs against skin all day. Mats here pull with every step.
4 Belly and groin Where most owners never look, and where a cat will not let you.
5 Britches and tail base The area an overweight or arthritic cat stops being able to reach at all.

What a comb-out actually does

The cat on the left is not dirty. That coat has knitted into the undercoat, and every time she tried to clean it herself she pulled on the skin underneath — which is why a cat in this state stops grooming and starts hiding.

The cat on the right is the same coat, combed out line by line rather than clipped off. That stays possible for as long as the mats will let a comb through to the skin. Past that point a lion cut is the kinder answer, and we will tell you which of the two you are looking at before we start rather than halfway through.

What you can book

Cat grooming services

Short-haired cats in good health rarely need any of this, and we will say so rather than book you in. These are for long coats, older cats, and cats who have stopped managing.

Collection & Return Add to any groom The carrier is the worst part of the day for most cats, and a familiar handler makes it shorter. Collected, groomed and home, with a call before they arrive. Learn more →
Sedation, honestly Grooming is never a reason to anaesthetise a cat. But a severely matted cat in real pain is sometimes a case where sedation is the kindest route, and being inside a clinic means that decision is made by a vet who has examined them, with monitoring, rather than by a groomer with a deadline. Ask us about it when you book.

Questions owners ask

My cat grooms herself. Why would she need me?

For most cats she does not, and we will say so. Short-haired cats in good health almost never need grooming, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling an appointment. It is long coats, older cats and unwell cats where it matters.

She has never let anyone brush her.

Common, and worth saying on the phone rather than discovering here. We work in short sessions in a quiet room, and we stop when a cat has had enough rather than pushing through. A cat sent home half-finished and still trusting people is a better outcome than a finished cat who now hides from carriers.

Is a lion cut cruel?

Not when the alternative is a coat that has felted into a sheet. It is unnecessary on a cat who is managing fine, and we will tell you if that is yours. Cat skin is thin — genuinely like tissue — and clipping a matted cat close to it is a skilled job, which is the argument for having it done somewhere with a vet in the building.

Which cats actually need regular grooming?

Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Himalayans and anything else long-coated; any cat over about ten; any cat carrying extra weight; and any flat-faced breed, which usually needs the eyes and face kept clean as well.

Do you groom cats that have been turned away elsewhere?

Often, yes. That is most of why we do this at all. Tell us what happened last time — we would rather start from the truth than find out halfway through.

Can you come to the house?

For some cats, and it is worth asking. Being groomed in their own room without a car journey first is an easier afternoon for a nervous cat. For heavy matting, the clinic is the safer place.
