The vet comes to you

For the cat you cannot catch, the dog who shakes the whole drive, and the seventeen-year-old for whom the journey is harder than the appointment.

Why owners ask for it

Five sentences we hear every week

If one of them is yours, the visit is probably worth it.

“I have four cats and I can only ever catch two.” Multi-cat households are the clearest case of all. Health checks, vaccinations and blood samples happen in the room they already live in — no carriers, no cat that vanished under the bed, and the whole household seen in one visit instead of three separate trips.
“He shakes the entire drive, and again in the waiting room.” For a frightened dog the car and the waiting room do most of the damage before anyone has touched him. At home we can take the time it actually needs, because there is nobody waiting behind you.
“She is seventeen. The journey takes more out of her than the appointment does.” Elderly and arthritic pets are the visits we would push hardest for. Quality-of-life reviews, pain management and palliative care are all better done where the animal is comfortable, and where you can talk properly.
“He was neutered on Tuesday and I cannot lift him into the car.” Post-operative checks and suture removal are quick, and they are exactly the sort of appointment that gets skipped because moving the animal is the hard part.
“Moving my parrot upsets him more than anything you would actually do to him.” Often true. Birds travel badly and examine well, so seeing one in its own cage — and seeing the cage, the food and the light it lives with — tells us more than the same bird would in a consult room.

What a home visit can and cannot do

The honest version. A vet who tells you everything can be done at home is selling you the journey, not the medicine.

Done at your address Full health check and consultation Vaccinations, for cats, dogs and birds Microchipping Blood and urine samples, run back at the clinic Flea, tick and deworming treatment Post-operative checks and suture removal Nail trims, ear cleaning and minor wound dressing Palliative care and end-of-life visits
Has to be the clinic, and why Anything under anaesthesia Surgery and dental work need monitoring, oxygen and a recovery area. No home has those, and pretending otherwise is how anaesthetic deaths happen. X-ray and ultrasound The machines do not travel. If we find something on examination that needs imaging, we say so on the spot and the taxi can collect the same day. Emergencies A car cannot carry an intensive-care unit. If it is an emergency, do not wait for a home visit — call and come straight in. Fluids over several hours A dehydrated cat on a drip needs watching, not a vet who left an hour ago.

What arrives at your door

A vet and a nurse, not a vet alone — a second pair of hands is what makes handling calm rather than forceful. With them: the vaccines in a cold box, microchips, blood and urine collection kits, parasite treatment, dressings, a scale, and the medication your pet is most likely to need so there is no second trip to collect it.

Samples go back to our own lab and most results are the same day, so a home visit does not mean waiting longer for an answer. How the lab works →

Six minutes of preparation saves the visit

None of it is difficult, and all of it is learned the hard way.

1 Pick one room and keep it quiet. A bedroom or bathroom with the door shut works best. Fewer places to hide means less chasing, which is the part animals actually mind.
2 Shut the cat in before we ring the bell. The single most common reason a visit gets cut short. Cats know the sound of a doorbell better than they know their own name.
3 Have the records out. Previous vaccination cards, medication boxes, and anything a previous vet gave you. Photos on your phone are fine.
4 Clear a table or a patch of floor. Somewhere with decent light that is not a sofa. A towel over a dining table is the best examination surface most homes have.
5 Put other pets in another room. Including the friendly ones. An anxious animal gets no calmer with an audience.
6 Write down what worried you. You will forget half of it once we are standing there. A three-line note on your phone is worth more than you would think.

Questions owners ask

Does a home visit cost more than coming in?

There is a call-out on top of the treatment itself, because it is a vet and a nurse out of the building for the length of the journey. You are told the full amount before we set off, not when we arrive.

What if you find something that needs the clinic?

We tell you there and then, and we are straightforward about whether it is today or this month. If it needs to be today, the pet taxi can collect and bring your pet home again afterwards.

Can you sedate at home?

Full anaesthesia, never — that belongs in a theatre with monitoring.

Do you do end-of-life visits?

Yes. For many families it is the kindest version of a very hard day, and it is one of the reasons we run the service at all. Call and ask for it directly; we will talk you through what happens before anything is arranged.

How long does a visit take?

Longer than the same appointment in the clinic, and that is part of the point. Allow around an hour for a straightforward single-pet visit, more for a household.

Can you see more than one pet in the same visit?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to use a call-out — one journey covers the whole household. Tell us how many and what species when you book so we bring enough of everything.
