Ask a vet before you drive

Fifteen minutes on video with one of our vets, your pet’s notes open in front of them. Sometimes that is the whole answer. Sometimes the answer is come in — and knowing which is worth the call.

Before you book one

A screen cannot feel an abdomen

It cannot listen to a chest, take a temperature, look inside an ear, or press on the place that hurts and watch what happens. Those four things are most of a physical examination, and no amount of camera quality replaces them.

What a video call is genuinely good at is the question underneath almost every worried owner: does this need a vet today, or does it not? That is a judgement, not a procedure, and it is one we would rather make with you than have you make alone at eleven at night.

Find yours on this list

Fifteen situations owners bring us, and which of the three answers each one gets. We would rather you booked the right thing than the convenient thing.

Online is enough “Should I be worried about this, or can it wait until the weekend?” The most common reason anyone books one of these, and the one it answers best.
Online is enough A rash, a hot spot or a patch of skin you can show on camera Skin is one of the few things that photographs honestly, as long as the light is daylight.
Online is enough Scratching, and whether it is fleas We can usually tell from the pattern of where they are scratching, and sort the treatment from there.
Online is enough Behaviour — spraying, barking, a puppy that will not settle Nothing here needs touching. It needs time and questions, which is exactly what a video call is good at.
Online is enough Food, weight and what to switch to Bring the bag or the tin into shot. Half the answer is on the label.
Online is enough A second opinion on a diagnosis, a medication or a quoted procedure Send the notes and any x-rays beforehand. We will read them properly rather than glance at them.
Online is enough A post-operative wound between scheduled checks Good light and a steady hand and we can usually tell you whether it is healing or whether to come in.
Needs hands Limping that started today Which joint, and how it moves under a hand, is most of the diagnosis. Video will not get there.
Needs hands A lump you have just found Size, texture, whether it moves under the skin, and often a needle sample. None of it happens on camera.
Needs hands An ear that smells We need to look inside it, and often to take a swab. What the outside looks like tells us very little.
Needs hands Vomiting or diarrhoea going into a second day Hydration and abdominal pain are both things you assess with hands, and both change the urgency.
Do not wait Breathing that has changed — faster, open-mouthed, or with effort Do not book a call. Phone us and come in.
Do not wait Collapse, a seizure, or a cat straining in the litter tray A blocked cat is hours, not days. This is the one owners most often wait on.
Do not wait Bleeding that will not stop, or anything swallowed that should not have been Call on the way. Knowing what is coming lets us be ready for it.
Do not wait An eye that has changed overnight Eyes are measured in hours. A day of waiting can cost the eye.
Anything in the bottom group is not a video call. Phone +971 50 345 0534 and come in, day or night. Emergency care →

How the call runs

Five steps, and the last one is the one that matters.

1 Book a slot Same day where we have one, and evenings, which is when most of this worry actually happens.
2 We send you a link
3 Fifteen minutes, with the animal in frame Not just you describing it. If you can get someone else to hold the phone, do.
4 You get it in writing What we think, what to watch for, and what to do next — sent to you afterwards, so you are not relying on memory at ten at night.
5 If it needs hands, we say so Plainly, and we book you in while we are still on the call.

Four minutes of preparation doubles what we can tell you

None of it is difficult, and all of it is the difference between a useful call and a vague one.

Film it before the call. Limps, coughs and strange behaviour never happen on cue. A ten-second clip is worth more than any description.
Use daylight, not a torch. Colour is half of what we are reading on skin, gums and eyes, and a phone torch destroys it.
Have the boxes to hand. Every medication, food and parasite product. Labels settle in two seconds what questions take five minutes to circle.
Know roughly what they weigh. Approximately is fine. Almost every dose depends on it.

Questions owners ask

What happens if you tell me to come in anyway?

Then the call did its job. Knowing it needs hands is a result, not a wasted appointment — and it is a far better outcome than sitting on it for three days. We book you in before we hang up.

Can I use this if my pet has never been to you?

Yes. Bring whatever history you have, and we will start from there rather than assuming. If you are already with another clinic and want a second opinion, that is a legitimate reason to book and we will not be odd about it.

I live outside Ajman. Does that matter?

Not for the call itself. It matters for what comes next — so if we think your pet needs seeing, we will tell you honestly whether that should be us or somebody closer to you.

Does it work for birds?

Often very well. A bird is best judged in its own cage rather than in a consulting room, so a video call sometimes shows us more than a visit would. Point the camera at the cage and the droppings tray as well as the bird.

Is this a real vet or a call centre?

One of our vets, the same ones you would see in the building, with your pet’s notes open in front of them. Nobody is reading from a script.

Where a call leads next

A video consultation is a starting point, not a service on its own. These are the places it usually points.

Attach a clip or a photo when you send this — we will have looked at it before the call starts, which is worth several minutes of the fifteen.
