Almost everything written about pet food online is marketing. Three things actually matter: the life stage, the calories, and whether your animal is the right weight. We can help with all three.
Not sure what fits? Send us the animal and we will send back the answer before you buy a bag of it.

The feeding guide on the packet is calculated for an intact, active adult, and most pets in this country are neither. The only measurement that matters is the one you can do with your hands, from above and from the side. Do it now, on the animal next to you.
Too thinRibs, spine and hip bones visible from across the room. No fat over them at all, and an obvious tuck behind the ribs.Worth a vet visit before you change the food. Weight loss in a cat is a symptom until proved otherwise.
About rightYou can feel the ribs easily under a thin layer, like the back of your hand. A waist you can see from above, and a slight tuck from the side.Keep feeding what you are feeding, and weigh them twice a year.
Too heavyYou have to press to find the ribs. No waist from above, and the belly hangs level or lower than the ribcage. The commonest health problem we see, and the one owners most often do not believe. Come and talk to us.
The food a general pet shop cannot sell you
Prescription diets are medicine that happens to be food. They need a diagnosis behind them, because given to the wrong animal they do harm — a kidney diet fed to a healthy young cat is not a neutral mistake. Already on one from another clinic? Bring the paperwork and we will supply it.
Kidney diseaseLower phosphorus and controlled protein. In cats this is one of the few interventions that reliably adds time, which is why we push it.
Urinary and crystalsAlters urine acidity and dilutes it. For a male cat who has blocked once, it is the difference between a one-off and a pattern.
Weight lossBulked with fibre so the animal is not hungry on fewer calories. Cutting the normal food instead is how cats end up with liver trouble.
Sensitive stomachsHighly digestible, single protein, no extras. The point is to remove variables, not to add ingredients.
Skin and food allergyHydrolysed protein, broken down too small for the immune system to recognise. It only works if nothing else goes in, treats included.
DentalA larger, fibrous kibble that scrapes rather than shatters. It slows tartar down; it does not replace a scale and polish.
Brands we stock
A short list, known properly, rather than thirty we could only have a vague opinion about. If your pet is settled on something we do not carry and it is working, stay on it — we will tell you so rather than sell you a switch.

The bit nobody tells you in this country
Heat ruins pet food, and it does it quietly
Everything on a shelf here is fighting forty-five degrees. Fats oxidise, the added vitamins degrade first, and none of it changes the way the food looks. Four things that make more difference than the brand on the bag.
Buy smaller bags in summerA bag that takes two months to finish in December takes the same two months in July, and the fats in it will have oxidised long before the end. Two small bags beat one large one from about April.
Never store food on a balcony or in the garageHeat destroys the added vitamins first and turns the fat rancid second. Rancid food does not always smell wrong to us, and cats refuse it long before we notice.
Keep it in the bag, inside the binThe bag is a barrier against light and air; the plastic bin is not. Pouring kibble loose into a container is the single most common storage mistake.
Wet food out of the fridgeCats in particular will refuse food straight from the fridge. Leave it twenty minutes, or add a spoon of warm water.
Changing food takes a week, not a day
Most of the upset stomachs blamed on a new food are actually blamed on the speed of the change. Mix it over seven days and the food usually turns out to have been fine.
Days 1–2A quarter new, three quarters old.
Days 3–4Half and half.
Days 5–6Three quarters new.
Day 7All new. If anything loosens, drop back a step for two days rather than starting again.
Questions owners ask
Is grain-free better?
For the vast majority of pets, no — and there is a real reason to be careful. Grain allergy in dogs is rare, far rarer than the marketing implies, and the American FDA has been investigating a link between some grain-free and boutique diets and a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. That investigation has not closed. Unless your pet has a diagnosed grain allergy, we would not put them on one.
Is raw feeding a good idea?
It is a decision with real risks on both sides, and we will talk it through rather than lecture you. What is not debatable is the food-safety part: raw meat carries salmonella and campylobacter, your pet sheds it in the house, and in a home with small children or anyone immunocompromised that matters. If you feed raw, we would rather know.
How much should I actually feed?
Less than the bag says, usually. The bag is calculated for an intact, active adult and most pets here are neither. Start twenty percent under, weigh them monthly, and adjust to the animal rather than the chart.
Can I buy prescription food without seeing a vet?
Not the prescription range, no, and that is not us being difficult. A kidney diet given to a healthy young cat does harm. If your pet is already on one from another clinic, bring the paperwork and we will supply it.
Do you deliver?
Yes. Food goes out on delivery, and so does everything else we stock. Send us the brand and the bag size on WhatsApp or over the phone and we will arrange it — and if it is a prescription diet, we will check the notes before it leaves, which is the part a supermarket cannot do.
My cat will not eat anything I buy.
Bring the list of what you have tried. Fussiness that appeared suddenly in an adult cat is usually dental pain or nausea rather than preference, and it is worth ten minutes with a vet before you buy another six flavours.
